Divided into two parts, this handbook explores many methods used tocompute frequencies for self sustained oscillations. The authorpresents the engineering formulae needed to calculate the acousticresonant modes for ducts and cavities- it is a complete collectionof models under one cover.

Part I is concerned with many of the methods used to calculateacoustic resonances for internal flow paths inside turbomachineryfor the conditions when the acoustic wavelength is much larger thanthe cavity dimensions (discrete resonator) and in which thewavelength is comparable to or smaller than the main flow pathdimensions (distributed resonator).

Part II shows how to compute the modes of instability for fluidoscillators that are self-sustained. These types of oscillationsare termed instability-induced excitation (IIE) and include jets, wakes, and mixing layers. The Handbook includes a microcomputerdisk containing FORTRAN 77 computer programs that were developed toperform the calculations described in the handbook which go beyondwhat is reasonably expected from a hand-held calculator.
