This fifth volume in the monographs series was written anddeveloped by an international team of experts from the U.S.,Brazil, India, and China, including Harvard Medical School, theHarvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, theUniversity of Massachusetts, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil,the Amity Institute of Nanotechnology, India, Guangxi MedicalUniversity, Nanning, China, as well as several other educationalinstitutes and foundations.

Abstract: The fullerene molecule with its uniquestructure of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a soccer ball structure isa molecule of great potential for a variety of applications and hasdrawn the attention of many physicists, chemists andengineers. Recently, these nanostructures have also been studiedfor their biological activities with a view towards using them forbiomedical applications.  One of the possible therapies forwhich fullerenes may have a real medical application is the lightbased therapy called photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is anon-surgical, minimally invasive approach that has been used in thetreatment of solid tumors and many non-malignant diseases.
