This course was designed for new or newly assigned engineers ortechnologists who require an introduction to the subject of drivenoscillations or "humming." Attendees were introduced to the fieldof combustion instabilities, with particular focus onunderstanding, modeling and controlling acoustic oscillations inunsteady combustion systems. The workshop content focuses on thepractical aspects of combustion dynamics and, using examples,extensively reviews experimental data and their relevance to theproblem of instability. Physical processes responsible for theoccurrence, frequency and amplitude of combustion-drivenoscillation were addressed. The workshop also addressed approachesfor modeling acoustic wave propagation in homogeneous andchemically reacting flow, along with instrumentation, data analysisand data reduction techniques.
