This colorimetric method is for determining chloride in therange of 0.1 to 1 mass-ppm in liquid hydrocarbons that are free ofhydrogen sulfide and low in total sulfur content. The method is notapplicable to samples with sulfur levels that exceed 10 mass-ppm,or that are colored. UOP Method 588 can be used for chlorideconcentrations above 1 mass-ppm. Bromides and iodides, althoughrarely present, are calculated as chloride. Samples that arepolymerized by sodium biphenyl (such as styrene) cannot be analyzedby this method. The method can be used to determine whether thechloride is organic or inorganic.
