This performance-based Safety Code covers the design,construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance,alteration, and repair of the following equipment and itsassociated parts, rooms, spaces, and hoistways, where located in oradjacent to a building or structure:

  • hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car, thatmove between two or more landings.  This equipment includes,but is not limited to, elevators;
  • power-driven stairways and walkways for carrying personsbetween landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to,escalators and moving walks;
  • hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car, thatserve two or more landings and are restricted to the carrying ofmaterial by their limited size or limited access to the car; This equipment includes, but is not limited to, dumbwaiters andmaterial lifts.

As a progressive alternative to the “prescriptive” A17.1 SafetyCode for Elevators and Escalators, A17.7 allows for moreflexibility in problem-solving.  A17.7 is specificallyintended for new elevator technology and practices.  It aidesjurisdictional authorities with guidelines to address newtechnology within current safety and performance requirements.

This Safety Code is to be used in conjunction with other volumesof ASME’s A17 series of safety codes.  Carefulapplication of these A17 safety codes will help users to complywith applicable regulations within their jurisdictions,while achieving the operational and safety benefits to be gainedfrom the many industry best-practices detailed within thesevolumes.

Intended for anyone engaged in the safety ofelevators, escalators and related conveyances, including thoseresponsible for:  design, engineering and manufacture;installation, operation, testing, maintenance, alteration andrepair; inspection; plans, contracts, administration, insurance andliability; property, facilities and plant management; and emergencyresponse.
