This European Standard specifies a method for detemiination of acid number by potentiometric
1 titration, of lubricating oils and additives soluble in mixtures of propan-2-01, dimethylsulfoxide and ~ toluene. It is applicable in the range 0,l mg KOWg to 250 mg KOWg, and to unused and used ~ lubricating oils and additives.
I In the case of engine oils, used engine oils and oils with a high polymer content, e.g. viscosity
I index improvers, precision will be poor as the electrode perforrnance will be impaired, and the
application of this method is not recornmended. Precision data are only valid for industrial oils and
j related products.
NOTE : No direct conclusions can be drawn from the content of the acidic constituents bn
the suitability of lubricants for specific applications, and it is not possible to rate
comparatively the quality of lubricants and additives on the basis of the quantity of acidic
components.

Dies vorliegende Norm legt ein Verfahren fest zur Bestimmung der Säurezahl durch potentiometrische Titration von Schmierölen und Mineralölzusätzen, die in Mischungen von Propan-2-ol, Dimethylsulfoxid und Toluol löslich sind. Dieses Verfahren gilt im Bereich von 0,1 mg KOH/g bis 250 mg KOH/g, und zwar für ungebrauchte und gebrauchte Schmieröle und Minerölzusätze. Die Angaben zur Präzision gelten nur für Industrieöle und verwandte Erzeugnisse; im Falle von Motorenölen und Ölen mit einem hohen Gehalt an Polymeren, z. B. Viskositätsindex-Verbessern, wird die Präzision schlechter, da die Elektrodenleistung beeinträchtigt wird. Anmerkung: Aus dem Gehalt an sauren Bestandteilen lassen sich jedoch keine direkten Rückschlüsse auf die Eignung von Ölen für bestimmte Einsatzzwecke ziehen. Eine vergleichende Bewertung der Qualität von Ölen und Zusätzen anhand des Gehaltes an sauren Bestandteilen ist nicht möglich. Warnung: Die Anwendung dieser Norm kann den Einsatz gefährlicher Stoffe, Arbeitsgänge und Geräte mit sich bringen.
