The classification system provides a means for specifying ordescribing pertinent properties of commercial nonmetallic gasketmaterials. Materials composed of asbestos, cork, cellulose, andother organic or inorganic materials in combination with variousbinders or impregnants are included. Materials normally classifiedas rubber compounds are not included, since they are covered in SAEJ200 - ASTM D 2000. Gasket coatings are not covered, since detailsthereof are intended to be given on engineering drawings or inseparate specifications.

Since all of the properties that contribute to gasketperformance are not included, use of the classification system as abasis for selecting materials is limited.
